Turmeric root's best known and most studied active ingredient is curcumin, a powerful antioxidant. The curcumin content of turmeric is only around 3% by weight, and it is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream on its own. In order to increase the healing benefits of the turmeric you eat, use this recipe containing black pepper and some fat to activate the curcumin. Keep a little of this anti-inflammatory paste on hand to add to smoothies, vegetable and protein dishes, and even desserts.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup organic turmeric powder

  • ½ cup filtered water

  • 1 tbsp virgin organic coconut oil

  • 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan.

  2. Stir continuously over medium heat until it thickens to a paste.

  3. Refrigerate in small glass container up to 2 weeks.
